Twitter to Censor Posts!

January 26th 2012 marks the day that twitter announced that is will start censoring users tweets to comply with  a government or lawyers request.

Twitter stated – “As we continue to grow internationally, we will enter countries that have different ideas about the contours of freedom of expression. Some differ so much from our ideas that we will not be able to exist there. Others are similar but, for historical or cultural reasons, restrict certain types of content, such as France or Germany, which ban pro-Nazi content.”

Twitter will not be proactive but reactivity censor a tweet when requested to do so and the censorship will only apply to other users in that country. e.g if a tweet is censored in Germany it will only be censored for other people in Germany, but not people viewing the tweet in the UK.

When a tweet has been censored the person trying to veiw the tweet or account will see a alert box that says “Tweet withheld” or “@Username withheld” in place of the affected Tweet or account.
