Trendnet Home Security Cameras Security Flaw

If you own a Trendnet Home Security Camera you should immediately go to their website and update your cameras firmware.

The reason? By typing in youripaddress/anony/mjpg.cgi you gain instant access to the cameras video feed with no need to enter a password or any other security information.

Over the past few weeks various websites have popped up showing live feeds and screen captures from the cameras with this flaw.

Google Allows Country Specific Blog Take Downs

Google has announced it is rolling out changes to it blogging service Blogger to allow it to take down / remove access to s blog on a country by country basis.

At the moment when Google receives a court order it has to apply it globally, but now it will be able just to apply to the country or territory on question.

Initially the changes will apply in Australia, New Zealand and India, but eventually it will apply to every country

This comes on the back of a similar division twitter last week.

Is this a worrying trend of things to come, where companies are bowing to the pressure from governments around the world, in the wake of the Arab spring and the London Riots?

    Twitter to Censor Posts!

January 26th 2012 marks the day that twitter announced that is will start censoring users tweets to comply with  a government or lawyers request.

Twitter stated – “As we continue to grow internationally, we will enter countries that have different ideas about the contours of freedom of expression. Some differ so much from our ideas that we will not be able to exist there. Others are similar but, for historical or cultural reasons, restrict certain types of content, such as France or Germany, which ban pro-Nazi content.”

Twitter will not be proactive but reactivity censor a tweet when requested to do so and the censorship will only apply to other users in that country. e.g if a tweet is censored in Germany it will only be censored for other people in Germany, but not people viewing the tweet in the UK.

When a tweet has been censored the person trying to veiw the tweet or account will see a alert box that says “Tweet withheld” or “@Username withheld” in place of the affected Tweet or account.

To view the Full post visit http://blog.twitter.com/2012/01/tweets-still-must-flow.html

    Custom Web Extentions Now Available

From Thursday 19th of January 2012 you will be able to apply for your own domain extension.

You are no longer tied to .com / .co.uk / .org / .mobi etc you can now have .london /.pepsi / .microsoft / .google etc.

This is great as it provides lots more options when choosing your domain, which is badly needed in a very crowded space.

But there is a catch the current price tag is $185,000USD  (£120,000) just to APPLY, current estimates are you will be nudging 1/2 a million in costs by the end of the process.

    Microsoft celebrates IE6 Death

Microsoft has held a tongue in cheek party to celebrate that IE6 has finally dropped below the 1% usage rate in the US as well as most of Europe. It is interesting that it still sits around 25% in china and 1.6% in the UK.

Microsoft as well as most developers and company IT departments are looking forward to the day when IE6 has gone for good.

IE6 is notoriously buggy for developers and is so full of security holes it makes swiss cheese jealous.

With usage levels at these levels most developers will now ignore the IE6 user-base as its not worth the time and money worrying about, in fact lots of sites now recommend an upgrade or even prevent you from going further if they detect you are using IE6

The only places IE6 might have a usage in the future is in internal technical situations where the software was written specifically for IE6 e.g. automation computers.
